AFR 9th and 10th round Zhuhai Summary

Saturday – Qualifying

Asian Formula Renault (AFR) which is jointly promoted by FRD & ZIC, came back to Zhuhai International Circuit (ZIC) on Sep 20, 2008.

Twenty three formula Renault vehicles participated in this race and Jim Ka To established his pole position by finishing the 9 th lap at 1'37''855. Cao Hong Wei was 2 nd while his teammate Geoffrey Kwong captured the 3 rd .

FRD, as the official promoter appointed by Renault Sports Technology (RST), has received strong support from RST from quite a few areas. The main areas are further enhancing the technical and sporting reinforcement level, engine rebuild requirement and improvement of spare parts support. Again, AFR is receiving the strong support from RST by sending two technical and administration staffs, Lucien Monte and Rudy Thomann to assist the operation of the race.

Saturday – Race One

The stage was set for a fierce competition between the two drivers started on the first row. After the red lights were off, Cao Hong Wei successfully overtook pole sitter Jim Ka To going into turn 1. Jim Ka To had no choice but to wait for his chance to remedy the situation. The competition between them was the main focus of the race at that time and attracted most of the TV cameras' attention.

After 6 laps of tough competition, Jim Ka To managed to overtake Cao Hong Wei via a late brake in the seventh lap and widened the lead to about 1.5 second.

Jim Ka To eventually won the race. Cao Hong Wei and Geoffrey Kwong finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Jim Ka To made it to the second in point table after this round while Geoffrey Kwong is still the point table leader.

Sunday – Race Two

The 10 th round of Asian Formula Renault started at 2:15 p.m. in ZIC. Over 10,000 spectators came to enjoy the race under Zhuhai's hot sunny weather.

After executing a better start, Jim Ka To gradually expanded his lead and set the fastest lap (1'38''2) in the process. He led the whole race and won 1st place again. Cao Hong Wei and Geoffrey Kwong, two drivers from Team PSR, captured 2nd and 3rd respectively. Luis Jorge SA SILVA from Champ Motorsports finished 4 th .

This is Jim Ka To's fifth win in a roll and sixth in the season. He indeed did a good job this year and accumulated 204 points after this racing weekend. Geoffrey Kwong is still having a lead of 20 points. There are 4 more rounds to go in AFR this year. Who is going to the Renault V6 test provided by RST in Paul Ricard is still not settled as the season champion is still not decided.

AFR will come back to ZIC on Oct 4 th & 5 th . AFR drivers surely will bring excitement to the race weekend.
