Asian Formula Renault grows with more race time in 2018Source：Asian Formula Renault   Post：2017-11-09
The FIA Asian Zone’s pre-eminent single seater racing series, Asian Formula Renault, have released their 2018 provisional calendar today, featuring a six-event schedule with a 30% increase in race time in 2018.
The race format in 2018 will see the races extend to 2 x 30 minute + 1 lap races, in line with the parent Formula Renault Eurocup series. This will see the amount of race time increase by around 30% from the 2017 format, which was 2 races of around 22 and 27 minutes duration, depending on the venue.
“We are undergoing a process to bring our format in line with the Formula Renault Eurocup, and as a result, we will be adopting a 2 x 30 minute race format.” explains Asian Formula Renault Series Manager, Shane Rogers.
“There was a consideration given to a three race format, however with Europe trending towards longer races in all the feeder categories it was decided that the longer races were preferable.”
In addition the series will unveil a new brand identity over the offseason to align more closely with Formula Renault in Europe, while maintaining the iconic “AFR” branding synonymous with the Asian Zone series.
Improvements seen in the series in 2017 are set to continue, with an ongoing partnership with the FRD LMP3 series seeing four events paired with the fledging prototype category. All AFR races in China are scheduled to be live streamed.
The Road To Champion program in partnership with Renault will also continue in 2018, offering young Asian based talent the opportunity to progress through the ladder structure to Formula 1.
“Our primary focus and strength is in our ability to deliver opportunities to young drivers like Charles Leong and Daniel Lu via the Renault Sport talent development streams including Road to Champion,” said FRD Motorsports President Kenneth Ma.
“But with the FRD LMP3 Series talent spotters watching, it opens up more direct opportunities for AFR drivers to directly graduate to professional motor racing.”
The series continues it’s ongoing partnership with GiTi Tire, with the Singapore headquartered company once again being the official tyre supplier to the series.
