( Zhuhai , China ¨CJanuary 21, 2007)Sunday afternoon, the weather in Zhuhai was colder than yesterday. Strong wind was making it even more difficult for the drivers in race 2 of the Formula Renault Winter Race. Michael Choi of Team DTM was a victim of cold tires and spun out in the warm up lap and as a result, the start was delayed allowing the marshals to recover his car.
Since it is not allowed to add fuel on the grid, the official took away 1 lap from the original 10 laps race because all the cars had to do one more warm up lap before the start.
Pole sitter Jim Kato had but managed to defend his leading position into turn 1. After that he was off for another afternoon cruise followed by Felix and Fredrik. As in race 1, the top 3 cars pulled away but the mid pack cars were in tough battle again. Japanese driver Yuki Iwasaki was pushing Geoffrey Kwong very hard and overtook him in lap three. One lap later, Geoffrey was passed by Kenneth Lau as well. Kenneth Lau was making a very impressive run as he improved his lap time every lap and scored his best lap time during the last lap.
At the same time, Eitan Zidkilov was getting close to 3rd place man, the rookie Fredrik Blomstedt and it looked like another battle is going to develop. However, when Fredrik was entering turn 9 on lap 3, he made a small mistake and spun the car around. But most importantly he stalled the engine and couldn¡¯t get it started so he has to retire from the race.
The field was getting spread out now. Kato was still in front, followed by Felix, Eitan and Yuki. With only a few laps to go, Yuki closed up to Eitan and started to challenge him. They exchanged position two or three time within a single lap and provided the spectators with the best fight of the afternoon. At last, Kato crossed the finish line first, Felix 2nd and Yuki 3rd which is his first podium position in his young career.
