Clio Cup China: Split the fleet, extend the brilliant

Clio Cup China was firstly introduced to China by Formula Racing Development Ltd (FRD) in 2009. The series drew much attention from the public and the thrill continues in 2010.

Info from FRD said that the Clio Cup fleet was split into 2 groups, one traveled all the way to Nurburgring, Germany, preparing for the upcoming Renault racing festival; one stay at ZIC and join the April 24 th -25 th Pan Delta-CSBK racing weekends.

Clio Cup China non-championship series featured one qualify session and one race on Saturday. The drivers were from Hong Kong, including seasoned ones and new faces. To name some of the familiar names from Touring car race Paul Poon, Oliver Lee, Kenneth Lau etc,.

The half hour qualifying session featured Kenneth Lau as the pole-sitter of the weekend, Poon 2 nd and Lee 3 rd .

At the beginning of the qualifying, David Louie led the session for 3 laps. Kenneth Lau, Oliver Lee and Paul Poon took turns to lead the session after lap 4. Started from lap 6, the track temperature turned better and most of the best laps of the day were set during these laps. Pole-lap was set by Lau at lap 6. Poon managed to better his time the last few laps and qualified 2 nd in the end.

The first round started in the afternoon. The fleet was divided into 3 groups and each group featured fierce fight. Paul Poon overtook pole-sitter Kenneth Lau at start. Frank Yu got off to a good start and moved to 3 rd after T1 and was following Kenneth Lau very aggressively. Byron Tong was 4 th while David Louie following very closely behind Lee.

Lap 2, Frank Yu got good exit speed and managed to overtake Kenneth Lau at the end of the big straight, occupying 2 nd .

Lap 3, Kenneth Lau tried to take back his lead from Yu and another straight fight started, having the grandstand spectators' audio-visual pleasure fully considered. In lap 4, Lau took back the position at T1.

Lap 5, Byron Tong, Lee, Louie were P4-6, respectively, with less than 0.4 sec difference among three cars. Louie managed to move to the front of the 3 cars and started to chase Yu to fight for a spot on the podium. Louie's car ran off the track when trying to pass Yu from outside, and Louie had to retire from the race. In the end, Poon won the race with Lau 2 nd and Yu 3 rd .

The 2 nd round of Clio Cup China non-championship series will start at 4:05 Sunday afternoon with promised excitement.
