Leopold Ringbom and Juan Arenas took Race 1 and 2 respectively

 

Leopold Ringbom from PS Racing Team Dominated the first race

Race one of the weekend started at 9am in the morning. Pole sitter Leopold Ringbom of PS Racing was expected to have an easy race considering his impressive qualifying time achieved the day before. He made full use of the advantage and finished the race from start to finish.

Juan Arenas of Gold Wolf Racing, occupied the second place of the grid even his time was slowed by a steering problem during the qualifying session. But it was very obvious that his steering problem didn’t go away and he was pressured immediately by Li Chi Cong of ART and Alexandra Asmasoebrata of PS Racing.With a best lap time of only 1’40.198”, there is no surprise that he was passed by Li Chi Cong on lap one, Alexandra on lap four and Timothy Teo on lap five. Timothy ran a nice race and scored better lap time than hisown Q time. Juan eventually finished the race on 4th position and Tim got himself a podium finish after Li Chi Cong was penalized 30 seconds due to jump start.

Leopold Ringbom expressed after the race :" I am so excited and I don't know how to express it. Generally speaking, I am so happy that I am the fastest guy in the first race in 2011 AFR season. It is really a good start, especially for me to take part in the rest of the series this year. "

Juan Arenas from Gold Wolf Racing Team Captured His First AFR First place finish

 The teams and drivers had plenty of time to rest and make more adjustment to their race cars getting ready for the 3.10pm race 2. After the convincing Q session and race, Leopold again was the guy expected to win race two. He did lead from start to finish agin but his jump start cooled his perfect weekend and he could only finish 5th after the penalty applied.

Again, three drivers; Juan Arenas, Alexandra and Li Chi Cong provided the action of race 2 while Timothy Teo had to retired on lap one after an accident. After getting his steering problem fixed, Juan was determine to give a good fight for the podium. On lap one, he overtook Victor Yung immediately to get in striking distance for the top three positions. He passed Alexandra on lap four and slowly narrowing the gap with Li Chi Cong. Hewas using all the trips in his pocket by maxed out using the whole circuit and braking late. With the huge roar of the 5,000 spectators in the grandstand, he slipped inside Li and passed him cleanly on lap eight. Li tried to fight back pushed Juan for three laps. They finished the race with a gap of less than a second.

The drama continued for Juan after he realized that he actually won the race after Leopold was demoted to fifth due to his jump start.

Both Juan and Li Chi Cong expressed that this competition was really intense. Juan indicated:" I am really happy for the intensive competition happening in this race. This is the first time for me to take part in AFR, and I am so proud that I can capture the prize with these good drivers. "

The next AFR race will be back to Zhuhai again during the CTCC weekend May 28-29. The rivalry that is slowly brewing between the top five drivers will continue to attract attention.
