AFR Series Round 8 - Ringbom Wins Again, Clean Sweep for Weekend

Round 8 started at 2:50pm. With the starting positions for Round 8 determined by the finishing order of Round 7, drivers used the normal standing start as weather conditions were cloudy but with a fully dry track. However, when the formation lap began, Martin Cao experienced mechanical difficulties and was unable to start. In the rush to get him started, mechanics went out to push start his car and Martin quickly closed up to the back of the field to start in the last grid position for round 8's standing start.

When the red start lights went off, Ringbom in P1 got off to a typically fast start, with Yuki making a slower start to be passed by Leo Ye. As Ringbom, Yuki, Kazuhiro and Leo battled through the first few turns, Patrice Bonzom of PS Racing and Diana Rosario of FRD Racing team collided in turn three. With Diana unable to continue and Patrice pitting to remove part of a damaged front wing, the safety car was deployed and the race restarted with a single file rolling start. On the rolling restart, Martin Cao , who had picked up several positions in the mayhem of the first lap, moved all the way up to P2 behind Ringbom with an aggressive drive up the outside of the pack as the drivers bunched up going into turn one. On the restart lap, Yuki and Kazuhiro also managed to get by Leo Ye. With the race order going into lap four now Ringbom, Martin, Yuki, and Kazuhiro leading, the remainder of the race continued with Ringbom followed closely by Martin , both slowly extending their lead on Yuki and Kazuhiro. By the end, Ringbom took his second win of the weekend 1.7 seconds ahead of Martin with Yuki taking 3rd and Kazuhiro 4th.

However, Martin was later disqualified post-race from his 2nd place finish as due to the complication occurred during his pushed start.

With the post-race technical penalty imposed on Martin Cao, the revised finishing order put Ringbom in first, Yuki in 2nd, and Kazuhiro in 3rd. Due to the race results, Ringbom has now retaken the 2011 AFR Series driver points lead with a total of 167 points to 158 for Yuki and 125 for Alexandra Asmasoebra. With just 9 points separating PS Racing’s Leopold Ringbom and Champ Motorsport’s Yuki Shiraishi, and Asmasoebra still in the running, with four rounds remaining in this year’s AFR series it will certainly be an exciting battle to the finish to see who will be crowned the 2011 AFR series.
