Final qualifying of 2011 Clio Cup China Series: Eric Lo claims both pole positions

In 2011 the Clio Cup China Series implemented the new qualifying rule in which qualifying one determines the start grid order for the first round of the weekend, and qualifying two determines the grid for round two. This rule reduces the relation between round one and round two in order to give the drivers a better chance at good qualifying and race results, thus enhancing the competition in the Clio Cup China Series. Thus the result of qualifying at 12:30pm today determined the grid for the race at 3:45pm this afternoon; and the grid for Sunday’s race is the result of today's qualifying two at 1:40pm.

Q1 - In today’s first qualifying the cars went out immediately when the session started, hoping to gain the front row for the weekend’s first round this afternoon. In the first four laps, Eric Lo and Frank Yu had a strong competition: Frank Yu was the first driver to break the 1:55 wall, and later Eric Lo made the fastest time with 1:54.391 to claim pole position. Title contender Steve Elmes, who set the 2nd fastest time at 1:54.702, will start on the first row alongside Eric Lo. 17-year-old driver Shaun Thong drove increasingly faster during the session and with just 2 minutes to go in qualifying made a time fast enough to put him on the second row for race one. Finally, Frank Yu gained 4th on the starting grid. Unfortunately Oliver Lee, who is currently 2nd on the driver points table, lost control in lap 1 and forced him drive in the gravel, he had to retire from qualifying.

Q2— Eric Lo broke his own ZIC record today to gain pole position again in today’s second qualifying, for Round 10 tomorrow afternoon. The first four cars for tomorrow’s race were the same as today, but in different order: Frank Yu achieved a best time of 1:54.721 to share the first row with Eric Lo; Shaun Thong was only 0.028 seconds slower than Frank to take 3rd, and Steve Elmes set a time of 1:54.789 and will start in 4th position for tomorrow’s race. The result of the last qualifying in this season is relative to the driver points table, and the significance will showed at tomorrow’s race. Let us look forward for the final race of this season.
